Economic Experts Warn COVID-19 Shutdowns Could Devastate Iowa

As several states reinforce COVID-19 restrictions, Iowa businesses fear the possibility of future closures. Iowa has yet to revisit strong COVID-19 mitigation efforts, but economists fear a holiday-fueled spike in cases could sap consumer confidence even more.

“It's just really devastating,” Mitchell said. “It's not realistic.”

Mitchell said more stimulus should be a top priority as the virus and the economy remain intertwined.

“I'm not a health doctor, but sort of a business doctor,” Mitchell said. “And if I'm gonna say, ‘What is my prescription for a quicker recovery?’ It's the basics -- it is washing your hands, wearing a mask (and) doing those socially distanced events.”

Mitchell said it is important to remember that even amid record highs, the stock market is not the same as the economy.
